For the first time in Mexico, the exhibition Martín Chambi and His Contemporaries features a series of pieces by Peruvian photographer Martín Chambi (Coasa, 1891- Cuzco, 1973) from the Jan Mulder collection, showing Inca ruins and the life of Andean communities in the early twentieth century.
What caracterizes Martín Chambis way of looking is his worldview as an indigenous Quechua, as a mestizo for the time he spent in Arequipa and as a photographer. The combination of these three factors allows you to better understand things he said in his life: “…there’s colonial mestizaje in my work,” “I’m representative of my race,” “Since I started taking photography seriously, I’ve done my best to familiarize people with the treasures of the land of the Incas.” Chambi had no need to be indigenista [an official advocate of indigenous rights] since he himself was indigenous.
