The exhibition of work by Pierre Huyghe (France, 1962) in the Museo Tamayo gives continuity to the research into the artist’s oeuvre, while relating it to various chance events involving the artist in Mexico. Huyghe links his interest in nature, culture and rituals with historicism, fantasy and oblivion to make connections: from his first visit to Mexico in 1987, to his expedition to the Naica mine in 2009, and followed by his subsequent visits to Mexico City invited by the Museo Tamayo. By emphasizing what is invisible, yet which exists, Huyghe also gives a glimpse of his unique vision of mining, excavations, journeys and expeditions, as well as adaptation. The project consists of three inter-related elements that are displayed simultaneously. The first is an aquatic sculpture, lying underneath the museum’s wooden floorboards and containing volcanic rocks and Mexican blind cave fish. The second is an exhibition in the sculpture courtyard alongside works from the Museo Tamayo collection and from the Museo de Arte Prehispánico “Rufino Tamayo” in Oaxaca. This aquatic sculpture and sculpture exhibition is accompanied by a publication that narrates Huyghe’s research process; it acts as an interpretative tool through theimages of the artist’s encounters with Mexico.
